For me my workouts are a source of energy. They give me power, they rev me up and they make me strong to take on the rest of my day. So is it a good idea to do a workout before bed? Not for me but is this a rule of thumb for everyone? Is there a reason why when I workout right before bed I am restless and have a terrible sleep?
My husband can work out lifting weights at the gym and come home and almost instantly fall asleep on the couch. Kinda makes me crazy if you want the honest truth this ability to work out late means more time in the day and fewer crowds to deal with.
So why are some of us simply not able to work out late in the evening… I was on a quest to find out and this is the scoop.
A study in the Journal of Sleep Research found that people who exercise vigorously for 35 minutes right before bed slept just as well as they did on nights when they didn’t. And a recent poll by the National Sleep Foundation found 83 percent of people who exercised — regardless of the time of day — reported better and more restful sleep than those who didn’t work out.
Turns that within an hour of working out the stimulating hormones cortisol and adrenaline that rev you up drop actually putting your body in a more relaxed state. Plus after a workout your muscles are looser and your body temperature drops which also sets you up for a more relaxed sleep.
The trick is planning to allow your body to relax and rest 1 to 2 hours before your bed time. Which is about right when I think about it. If I hit an aerobics class for 7 and got to bed at 11:00 I have a great sleep but go to a later class for 8:30 and there is just not enough time for those feel good hormones and my muscles to take a break.
Another solution is to simply find time first thing in the morning and start the day off full of energy. Whatever solution works for you it is important to listen to your body and the signals it is giving you. Paying attention to your internal clock and respecting it’s limits will not only help you plan your day better to get your workouts in but will also ensure quality sleep.
